Compaq Pushes Speedier Net Connections

Techstination feature for Thursday, April 15, 1999

Tired of that slow connection to the net? Help is on the way. I'm Fred Fishkin with Bootcamp, a report on computers and technology. Depending upon where you live, you may be seeing ads these days for high speed Internet service. Many cable companies now offer it and phone companies are starting to offer DSL lines for high speed access. Another choice, available nationwide, is to connect by satellite with DirecPC. The problem for people like you and me is trying to stay up with what's available. Now, Compaq Computer is rolling out a new service that let's you type in your phone number and it will tell you which high speed access choices are available where you live. Of course, you can then order a system that's ready to drive at those high speeds. Compaq has worked with DirecPC, for instance to make the satellite connection easier than ever. DirecPC's Paul Gaske...

"We have worked with them to get a universal serial bus interface for our product so we have an external modem now. In the old days we would simply have a card that plugs into your PC. So users that come on the system now simply have a cable that goes from a box that we make and they plug it into their computer. This gives them the high speed service with simply adding a dish on the outside of their house."

Service prices start at under thirty dollars a month.
