More and More Homes Get Networked

Techstination feature for Wednesday, February 25, 2004

More and more homes…get networked. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. The popularity of digital cameras and all of that MP3 music has resulted in the rapid rise of equipment that allows those files to be shared around a household. At Netgear, which competes with companies like Cisco, Dlink and Microsoft in selling home networking equipment, CEO Patrick Lo says….

"One report that I looked at …at the latest…is saying that in 2003 it's estimated that 13 percent of the American homes already own a home network. Mostly WiFi. And the prediction from them is in about three years time, that's going to double."

With networking being used not just to link personal computers. A growing number of devices are being sold to bring digital music, pictures and videos to standard TVs and stereo systems. Netgear is selling a Wireless Digital Music Player. Lo says the potential market is tremendous…

"In the U.S., we have roughly about a hundred million homes and in which over 85 percent own a TV. Over 95 percent own some kind of stereo or boom box equipment. And most of them actually own multiple of them."

Microsoft and computer makers are pushing what are called Media Center PCs…and devices will arrive later this year to connect TV programs and other content stored on them….with TVs elsewhere in the house. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
