A Two Ounce Full Page Scanner

Techstination feature for Thursday, March 4, 2004

A two ounce full page scanner. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. It's a thin, wand shaped device called the DocuPen. And while there have been portable scanners on the market before, most required users to run pen type devices across lines to capture text. This device is the width of a page….so users can simply run it down a document. Doug Verkaik is president of Planon System Solutions…

"What we've been able to come up with is a real solution for capturing full page scans. Our scanner is pen-sized but it scans the full width of a document and stores up to a hundred pages into its memory and can be downloaded into your PC."

It runs on batteries so it can be used while your away from the computer. The first model is monochrome only. One drawback is the price…about two hundred dollars…or what a good flatbed scanner might cost. You pay for the portability. But who will buy?

"The typical ones we know about now are lawyers, for instance. They can go into a court room and have instant access to capturing a document they may not have had in the first place. Another would be students."

Sales people, real estate brokers and such are potential buyers as well. Planon is planning to add new features such as color and Bluetooth capabilities later this year. For now, if you need to take a scanner with you…the DocuPen may be the magic wand you need. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
