Better Digital Cameras for Less Money

Techstination feature for Friday, March 5, 2004

Better digital cameras, for less money. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. Sales of digital cameras soared 85 percent in the U.S. during the final three months of last year according to the IDC market research firm. The number one spot was held down, once again, by Sony. And while the competition is growing more intense from Kodak, Canon and others…Sony is introducing new models it hopes will keep it on top. Mark Weir… the company's senior product manager for digital still cameras…most in demand is the thousand dollar, eight megapixel DSC F828 aimed at professionals and serious hobbyists. And for the mainstream consumer market…there's the CyberShot DSC T1…

"This is a different form factor camera…in that it's very slim. It's about seven eighths of an inch thick and about the same size as a deck of cards. But even though it's this compact, it includes a 2.5 inch LCD."

Like some Dimage models from Minolta…the optical zoom lens remains internal. Even though the five megapixel camera has a price of about 550 dollars, it has rapidly become a top seller in Japan. Weir says American consumers have been more willing to spend in the 300 to 350 dollar range for a digital camera. About staying number one, he says…

"We think that that the innovative designs and the very competitive feature sets put us in good position to hold onto our number one market share."
