"Basically, the product is a DVD player that has a wireless connection that sits in a home theatre system. And it basically allows the consumer to connect their living room environment to where their PC is in the home. So when consumers have audio files, photo files, video files in various rooms throughout the house, they can aggregate those into their TV, living room experience and actually play that back on and through their home theatre system."
The latest version of the device uses higher speed, 802.11 G wireless networking…fast enough to allow the streaming of video files from room to room. For instance, TV shows recorded on a Media Center PC in one room of the house….can be watched on a TV through the Connected DVD player. About the quality of the video, Milne says…
"The networks have come a long way over the last couple years. Wireless will always have some stability issues. For the most part, we believe this is good enough to move video across a home."
The Connected DVD can be ordered with an Ethernet connection for wired networks as well, which provides even better video. It sells for under two hundred dollars. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
