Those Surprising American Cell Phone Users

Techstination feature for Friday, April 2, 2004

Those surprising American cell phone users. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. Cell phones with built in cameras have turned into the fastest selling consumer electronics products in history….eclipsing DVD players according to industry statistics. And that has helped to propel LG to number one in CDMA handsets. The kind used by Verizon Wireless and Sprint. And LG Phones President Juno Cho says the reaction of American consumers to camera phones came as a surprise…

"Frankly speaking, yes,I was really surprised. Because we thought American people seemed to be too practical. We are now revising our thinking about our multimedia strategy for the U.S. market."

LG and other cell phone makers are preparing to introduce one megapixel cameras in handsets….and that may be bumped up to 2 megapixels by the end of next year. By the end of next year…look for three and four megapixel cell phone cameras…with the competition growing more intense. At the recent industry convention in Atlanta, Cho demonstrated a variety of Internet connected appliances…that can be controlled by cell phone. How soon might we see that kind of technology….

"That's difficult to say. In Korea, there are already four to five thousand households who are already using that kind of home appliance, home network, controlled by a mobile phone."

But it is coming…it's just a matter of when. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
