Making Smart Phones Smarter

Techstination feature for Friday, April 23, 2004

Making smart phones…smarter. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. Cell phones like PalmOne's Treo 600 or Kyocera's 7135 that use the Palm operating system or phones that use PocketPC or Windows Mobile software from Microsoft can access all kinds of information over the Internet. But getting to the data you're looking for through those cell phone connections isn't always easy. Handmark, which has carved out a niche selling software for PDAs, has starting selling a new service called Express…that makes the online capabilities of the smart phones more useful. News, weather, sports, stocks, maps, movie times are updated with a single screen tap. VP Douglas Edwards…

"We put all of this into a really compact environment that is actually an application, it's not a browser, it's an application. So for example, when you get the weather on your device, as opposed to having to wait for all of those little graphics files that want to download, all of that is built into the applications"

Which means your connect time for getting the information you want is kept to a minimum. The software also includes an application for looking up addresses and phone numbers….

"And I get the complete listing, name, address, phone number and I have the ability to press just one button and call them from my smart phone. Or I press one button, and this is a great feature, I add it to my permanent address book on the device so that I don't have to do any data entry."

The savings on 4 1 1 calls from your cell phone can help pay for the Express charges of 7 dollars a month…or about 70 dollars a year. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
