HP Shoots for More Digital Camera Sales

Techstination feature for Wednesday, May 5, 2004

Hewlett Packard wants a bigger slice of the digital camera pie. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. Digital camera sales continue to soar…led by names like Sony, Kodak, Canon and Olympus. Hewlett Packard claims a respectable number five position in North America…and it is adding new features it hopes will boost it higher. The latest camera is the Photosmart R707. It boasts a curved stainless steel front….and 5.1 megapixels. But what really sets it apart, says HP digital imaging systems master engineer Robert Gann, is the technology inside the camera….such as adaptive lighting…

"And what it does for you is it allows you to take photographs in a situation that you may very well not be able to do in a traditional camera, in fact. A professional in a dark room might be able to achieve the same results, but what we've done is put it in the hands of the consumer. Another thing that's a very common problem for digital cameras is red eye. You know what red eye is. When you take a photograph of somebody, their iris is open, you get a red flash. In this camera, you can actually remove the red eye in the camera."

It can remove red eye from any number of people in group shots. The R707 doesn't include a memory card….but has 32 megabytes of internal memory. The price…about 350 dollars. A docking station that includes an extra rechargeable battery is 79 dollars more. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
