Taking DVD on the Road

Techstination feature for Tuesday, April 27, 1999

Taking DVD on the road. I'm Fred Fishkin with Bootcamp, a report on computers and technology. Okay show off, just imagine the look on the face of that shlump sitting next to you on your next business trip, when you start playing your own in flight movie. Hah! DVD drives are becoming a popular option in many notebook computers....

"The pricing of DVD has become so aggressive that it's becoming very accepted, very quickly this year."
Mary Land of Gateway which makes the sleek little 3100 LS, the FireAnt. It has made DVD standard...

"You can take it with you and have it in the car for the kids or take it on a plane and watch it when you're travelling."

The price, just over three thousand dollars. IBM has a new ThinkPad 570...that lets you travel light...or pack on a DVD and two batteries that will last through two, maybe three movies...

"It's the thinnest and lightest full function notebook that you can take with you on the road. But it also then transforms to a full function, desktop notebook computer when you bring it back to your office."

IBM's Rick McGee. Prices for the 570 start at around 27 hundred dollars. The cheapest way to achieve that airline envy is Panasonic's Palm Theater. It is an under three pound portable DVD player with a 5 inch LCD screen. It sells for under 11 hundred dollars. It can double as a DVD player in your home entertainment center as well.
