Credit Card Sized Digital Music Player

Techstination feature for Tuesday, June 1, 2004

A digital music player the size of a credit card. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. Hard drive based digital music players that let you carry around thousands of songs have been winning lots of fans…thanks to Apple's line of iPods. But not everyone wants or needs to carry around a whole music library. One of the niftiest new flash memory music players out on the market…is the Muvo Slim from Creative Labs. Senior Brand Manager Lisa O'Malley…

"This is a tiny, sleek, stylish credit card sized player that's only a third of an inch thick. Despite its size, it's really a full featured player giving MP3 and WMA playback as well as FM radio, including FM recording and a voice recorder."

All in a device that can almost get lost in a shirt pocket. It's not aimed at your typical digital music maven…

"We've really aimed this, because of its size and sleek appearance, at the executive or professional traveler."

Claimed battery life is up to 17 hours…and simply plugging the Muvo Slim into a USB port recharges it. The initial model has 256 megabytes of storage…with no slot for adding more. The two hundred dollar price is high given the limited capacity, but Creative believes the design and capabilities will attract buyers. A 512 megabyte version is due out later this summer. The company competes head to head with Apple's iPod with its Zen extra hard drive based players with up to 60 gigabytes of storage. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
