Need a Part? The Web to the Rescue!

Techstination feature for Wednesday, April 28, 1999

There are millions of web sites out there, but how many are really useful? I'm Fred Fishkin with Bootcamp, a report on computers and technology. Out of all the web sites out there, not many deserve to be in your favorites or bookmarks list. The most popular sites of all are the ones that help you find information. Phone numbers, movie times, street maps or search engines. Now you can add Sears to the list. The giant retailer has put its PartsDirect service on the web...

"Sears PartsDirect is the largest provider of consumer parts in the country. We offer consumers more than four point two million parts from over four hundred different manufacturers such as appliances and tools, lawn and garden equipment. And even owner's manuals. All for a product that's not even sold at Sears."

Kevin Callahan of Sears PartsDirect. The web site at searspartsdirect.comwill help you identify that hard to find part...

"We're adding diagrams, the schematics of the exploded views of all these products, ...at least 70 thousand detailed diagrams over the Internet so that consumers can access it and they can identify the part that they need and order it directly, right through the web site."

Can't find the owner's manual. You can now order a new one online. Eventually, electronic versions should be available. When a web site can make your life easier, it gets my vote.
