A Pocket Sized PC

Techstination feature for Wednesday, June 2, 2004

A pocket sized PC. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. It's just a little bigger than a PDA, but the O1 ultra portable computer, runs the same operating system and software as a typical notebook or desktop computer. Manufacturer OQO is beginning formal evaluations with 40 major corporate customers this summer and plans to begin sales in the fall. Co-founder and chief technology officer Jonathan Betts-LaCroix…says the O1 uses a one gigahertz Transmeta processor…

"A 20 gigabyte hard drive and 256 megabytes of RAM. It runs full on Windows XP. As you can see it fits right here in my pocket. And it's got two different kinds of wireless, 802.11 and Bluetooth and all the standard ports you expect on a PC. USB, Firewire and then it's got a docking station that you can plug in that you can connect to a full sized keyboard and monitor. So you can use it as the only computer that you use."

While you're on the road…the LCD screen slides up to reveal a small keyboard. An external CD or DVD drive is needed to install software. OQO says the price will be under two thousand dollars. Who will buy it?

"Our primary interest and the primary demand that we're seeing right now is from enterprise, enterprise customers. But we expect to have a fair amount of interest from individuals as well."
