Maps and directions on your cell phone. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. Pharos Science and Applications, among the first companies to sell GPS hardware and software for PDAs…is looking to cell phones as its next frontier. Marketing VP Jim White says new Smart Navigator services are available through cell phone carriers such as Verizon Wireless…

"Smart Navigator has several elements to it. One is Smart Traffic where we take the traffic incident data and traffic flow information…how fast is traffic moving…that's supplied by state and local departments of transportation. We then relay that via the Web to wireless devices whether it's a PocketPC phone, a smart phone or Brew phone."

The real time traffic data is available in sixty cities around the country at the moment. Verizon charges about 4 dollars a month for the service. As for the future…

"You know the cost of GPS chipsets have come down so much that the ability to provide GPS location finding and navigation capability is going to work its way into everything from GameBoys to cell phones to wrist watches and a variety of other places I think."

You can check the cities where the Smart Traffic service is now available on the Pharosgps.com Web site. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
