A cheaper way to high definition TV. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. Sales of high definition TV sets jumped fifty percent last year…but consumer confusion about the technology…and the higher costs….are still holding back growth. EchoStar's Dish Network, competing with rival DirecTV…and with cable companies… is now offering packages to bring high definition into homes…for less money. It is offering subscribers…a completely installed HD satellite receiver….and their choice of two high def TVs….for 999 dollars. For another six hundred dollars…the package includes a high definition DVR…that lets you pause and record high definition or standard definition programs. EchoStar's Marc Lumpkin…

"Today Dish Network offers nine channels in high definition TV. And those are the most popular channels like ESPN HD, Discovery HD and now TNT HD."

The HD program package costs an extra ten dollars a month. Where Dish and rival DirecTV are behind some cable companies…is in offering local channels in HD. But Lumpkin says…

"We do have the ability in our set top boxes to bring you your local TV channels in high definition. That means we have a tuner built into our satellite receiver that will bring in your local off air channels."
