Connecting Tivo to Your Home Network

Techstination feature for Wednesday, June 23, 2004

Connecting Tivo..to a home network. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. Facing competition from cable companies offering digital video recorders to subscribers…Tivo has decided to eliminate its extra charge for home networking capability to owners of its stand alone Series 2 boxes. Product marketing director Ted Malone…

"We took the features which were part of the Home Media Option and actually integrated them into the full Tivo service. Now, all of our subscribers that have a Series 2 DVR have access to those home networking features. And that includes a digital music player, a digital photo viewer, online scheduling where you can go to Tivo.com and schedule recordings and have them automatically sent to your DVR, as well as multi room viewing…which allows two DVRs that are on a home network to share video recordings between each other."

The charge for additional recorders in a household…has been nearly cut in half…to 6.95 a month. There's no word on when DirecTV Tivo box owners will get those capabilities. The company has also announced what it calls Tivo to Go…

"And Tivo to Go will take your recorded programs from your Tivo and transfer them to either your PC or your Mac where you can watch them from the hard drive on your PC."

It's Tivo's answer to the challenge from Portable Media Center devices that will be arriving soon. More on that in an upcoming report. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
