Memorials to Loved Ones... On the Web

Techstination feature for Friday, April 30, 1999

Maybe you don't have your own web site in life, but you could have one in the hereafter. I'm Fred Fishkin with Bootcamp, a report on computers and technology. We all have to go some time. Kick the bucket. Buy the farm. But now your loved ones can create a lasting memorial to you in cyber-space. Welcome to the web, a company called ObitDetails.com....

"What we've done is created a site whereby families can create obituaries and memorials for loved ones with significant amounts of detail and content, that will remain essentially indefinitely on the Internet for them and others, future generations, to be able to visit."
Stopher Bartol, CEO of ObitDetails.com, sort of sounds like he belongs in the business. He is working with funeral homes in increasing numbers of cities....so they can offer families the option of creating a memorial website when they are making all the other arrangements. The one time fee is 145 dollars for up to a thousand words and a photo. My question is....what happens to all of these memorials that have been paid for if ObitDetails bites the dust too...

"We take a portion of that one time fee and we set it aside in a fund that essentially pays for the ongoing storage and upkeep."

Eventually, Bartol says, families will be able to add video clips as well. Maybe you could record your own ahead of time to greet future visitors when they come by to click.
