Techstination feature for Thursday, July 1, 2004

Can Nintendo keep its grip on the handheld game market? Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. Look around in restaurants…shopping centers…the back seats of cars. Wherever you see kids…you'll likely to see a Gameboy. Nintendo has owned the handheld video game machine business. It will be facing some competition. Sony plans to start selling the PlayStation Portable…or PSP in Japan before the end of the year and in the United States next spring. But Nintendo isn't sitting still. It plans to launch the Nintendo DS…the DS standing for dual screen…in the U.S. and Japan…this year. Nintendo Anka Dolecki…

"We have the dual screen. We have a touch screen that you're going to be able to use either your finger or a stylus in order to move characters. The system has a voice recognition. It has wireless capabilities, so you could have players to play in the same room or across the country."

The DS will be able to use the huge variety of Gameboy Advance cartridges…in addition to new titles developed for it. And while Sony's PSP is expected to also play videos and music…Nintendo will just focus on game play…

"We believe that by adding all these different features like music to a system really doesn't allow us to focus on what the gamer wants."

Nintendo hasn't disclosed pricing for the DS…but promises it will be what it calls affordable. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
