New Printers From Canon Push Photos

Techstination feature for Monday, July 12, 2004

New printers from Canon push photos. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. They are re-designed…with a more squared off shape…similar to what Hewlett Packard and Epson have done with many of their ink jet printers. Beyond that Canon's new printer line up aims to get more people to print photos at home. John Lamb is senior marketing manager for the consumer imaging group…

On two of our printers… the 99 dollar and the 149 dollar products…which will be the IP 3000 and IP 4000…we are adding in an entire second paper source. So you're not only going to be able to load paper into the auto sheet feeder, you be able to load it into the second front loading paper cassette. We want to be able to allow you to put in photo paper at the same time. Without having to switch papers, it helps to increase your abilities and your ease of use when printing photographs."

Another valuable new feature…auto-duplexing that lets you print on both sides of a sheet of paper automatically. Canon also has a new branding strategy…

"And it's called Pixma. The first three letters being p-i-x for picture, and the last two letters, m-a, is the first two letters of maximum. It's actually more of a concept that they're using in development as well. And everything is about maximizing pictures."

Printing more pictures at home…means more sales of ink and photo paper for Canon. And in the printer business…those consumables are where the profits are. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
