Can Sony Unseat Apple's iPod?

Techstination feature for Thursday, July 15, 2004

Can Sony unseat Apple's iPod? Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. It has been 25 years since Sony invented the Walkman. But fast forward to any street corner today….and you'll likely see lots of people carrying iPods around. Apple has won over lots of fans with its hard drive based digital music players. Now Sony wants to win them back. The HD Walkman will arrive later this summer….followed by the Pocket Vaio…which will also display digital photos. I asked Sony Electronics President Dick Komiyama why his company is so late?

"When you're looking at the overall portable audio business, the majority is still packaged media based…CD and DVD. But at the same time, the new technology, digital, is an important one. And when we do so, we make a very serious effort."

That serious effort is about to begin. The Sony HD Walkman is smaller than even the iPod mini. Can Sony overtake Apple?

"Well certainly these are technology innovations and Apple did a good job to introduce it. We are coming late, maybe. But we are introducing new features, new technologies…such as data compression."

Sony's players will work with its Connect digital music store…much like the iPod works with Apple's iTunes…which has won lots of praise for its ease of use. The battle is about to begin. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
