Techstination feature for Monday, July 19, 2004

There are lots of video games out there….with high end graphics and sophisticated story lines. But lots of folks long for simpler times…(sound) Ms. Pacman is the latest title from Jakks Pacific….which has found gold in those golden oldie games. And you don't need to buy a console or computer to play them. They've built software…into joy sticks…that plug into any TV….

"And so we brought back originally the Activision, the Atari and the Namco…all of their old titles. We were really surprised at how well those still resonated with not only the gamers …the guys in their 30s and 40s who grew up with this…but even the kids of today."

Jakks Pacific Marketing Director Anson Sowby. The controllers with the built in games sell for 20 to 25 dollars….and that's one of the big selling points. Jakks Pacific is using the simplified video game format for other titles…from Sponge Bob to Spiderman…and says VP Genna Goldberg…it has corralled a market share of about 90 percent…

"We've seen a few competitors in this space, but we feel very confident that we've signed virtually all of the key retro titles as well as the key classic titles for right now."

Multiplayer versions…and Madden Football are among the additions planned for later this year. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
