The Video Game That Wouldn't Die

The video game that wouldn't die. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. It has been a dozen years since Mortal Kombat brought a new level of graphic violence to video games….and stirred up debate. Now…Midway Games estimates the franchise…including games, movies and cartoons…has generated a billion dollars worth of business. And it isn't over yet. The next Mortal Kombat game…for home consoles…is due out this fall and Midway is also bringing back the originals. Game producer Nathan Rose…says they'll be included in the Arcade Treasures 2 collection…

"We have 20 titles from the late 80s to early 90s… the likes of Mortal Kombat 1,2 and 3, Primal Rage, Hard Drive and Pit Fighter. Some really, really well known titles. Me, I'd run into the pizza parlor or something like that on the way home or go into the movie theatre and play these games. I remember them from my childhood."

Rose says the games are true to original arcade versions…

"We've ported or emulated all of these titles from the arcade source code. Fortunately we were able to keep good archives and were able to get hold of all this code. So all the strategies you used in Mortal Kombat in the old arcades you'll be able to use on this. Because there's the Easter eggs and the bugs that are present in all these games."

And the violence in those old games…(sound) seems tame in comparison with what players will find in Mortal Kombat: Deception in the fall. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
