The Convergence of Digital Video and Still Cameras

Techstination feature for Wednesday, July 28, 2004

The convergence of digital video and still cameras. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. Some of the best known names in consumer electronics are continuing the push to create cameras that can take both high quality digital video and still pictures. Sony's Rosemary Flynn says the DCR PC330 will arrive in September…

"It's a three megapixel camcorder. So not only does it take exceptional video, it takes excellent three megapixel still images."

Sony uses a single lens for both digital and still pictures. You will pay for the convenience of two cameras in one. It sells for about thirteen hundred dollars. Samsung's updated Duo-Cam…will cost about five hundred dollars less. It still uses separate lenses for digital and still…but is less cumbersome than the original model. Marketing director Claude Frank…

"The original form, of course first generation, there's always room for improvement. The first generation was a little bit different where we had a rotating lens assembly, it was a little bit on the cumbersome side. This year, we've basically made the product the same size as a shooting style mini-DV, which is considerably compact compared to the original and is on a par with any other camcorder that is on the market today."

The dual lenses are placed one on top of the other. It can take four megapixel still pictures…and includes a 3X optical zoom. The idea of taking just one camera along for videos and stills…is becoming a lot more practical. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
