Nintendo Readies the DS

Techstination feature for Friday, August 6, 2004

Nintendo readies the DS. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. There won't be a new Playstation from Sony this holiday season and there won't be a new Xbox for Xmas. But Nintendo says it will have its new handheld game machine…ready to go on sale. The name is now official and so is the design. VP George Harrison….

"It's called the Nintendo DS, the DS standing for dual screen. The redesign was made to reconfigure the buttons a little bit, make it a little easier to play, make it a little bit thinner and sleeker, make it more portable."

Two screens….chat functions, voice recognition….and both short range and WiFi wireless communications for Internet game play are all built in. And it will work with existing Game Boy Advance titles. Nintendo hasn't yet set the price of the DS. About the possibility of not being able to meet consumer demand, Harrison says…

"You know a little shortage is always a good thing in our industry. Certainly when we launch new hardware systems, the clamoring to find one in the stores is part of the excitement of the launch and really builds the momentum of the product line. We expect to have a good quantity for the holiday season that will be split between ourselves and the market in Japan which is also launching this holiday."

The DS will give Nintendo another head start on Sony…which has delayed the release of its Portable Playstation until at least next March in the U.S. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
