An Update to Windows XP

Techstination feature for Wednesday, August 4, 2004

An update to Windows XP. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. After a couple of delays, Microsoft has released Windows XP Service Pack 2 to manufacturing. If you have the automatic update feature turned on…the update will be downloaded to your PC in the background and you'll be notified when it is ready to be installed. SP2 group manager Rebecca Norlander says the focus is on security. The Windows firewall will be turned on by default…

"And what that means is that in some instances you will now be prompted, would you like this particular program to be able to speak on the Internet. Another noticeable change for people will be their experience in the browser. There are several different things that we've done. One of them is we have changed some of the esoteric dialogue that people used to see, to provide clear and concise information about what's going on and the choice they have to make. They will also have pop-up blocking on by default which will allow you to cruise the Internet without all the random advertisements, etc….popping up in your face."

If you don't have a high speed Internet connection, you can order a free disc with the service pack from Microsoft's Web site…

"I think this is one of the most significant service packs we've ever done for Windows. We really have changed the way we think about security and put a bunch of things in place in the operating system to help protect their PC."

New computers preloaded with SP2 will begin to arrive next month. Bloobmerg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
