Your Medical Records...in Your Pocket

Your medical records in your pocket. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. The idea of having electronic medical records…that are kept securely….but available to doctors or hospitals… is being pushed by the White House…but is far from becoming a reality. But you can take matters into your own hands. A company called Med-InfoChip has begun selling a small USB drive…that is designed to carry your medical history with you wherever you go. In an emergency…those records can be accessed quickly by any medical professional. Company co-founder Dr. Carl Franzblau, who is Chairman of Biochemistry at Boston University's School of Medicine, says users simply plug the device into the USB port of any PC or Mac…

"And then it's very, very simple. All of the fields are completely outlined. It's completely printable so that if you hit one single button, the entire record that you've presented will in fact print out a little booklet."

You can also store images of EKGs, X-rays and even your passport and birth certificate. While doctors offices and hospitals often store records on computers these days…their systems may not talk to each other. The USB device can bridge that gap…

"I'm not replacing my doctor's, I'm not replacing my clinic, I'm not replacing my hospital records. They remain where they are. I have complete control over what I put into my own personal health record."
