WiMax is on the Way

Techstination feature for Thursday, September 16, 2004

WiMax is on the way. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. Lots of households and businesses have been adding wireless Internet routers….that let you use cable or DSL connections within a range of about 300 feet. Now imagine extending that out for about 30 miles….while increasing the connection speed to 75 megabits per second. That essentially is what WiMax is and Intel has begun shipping sample parts to some customers to make it a reality. Chief technology officer Pat Gelsinger…

"You can sort of think of the cell phone and what it did to the telephone with what WiMax will do to broadband data services. It literally will give you this wireless, high speed connection wherever you go and whatever service you want to operate on. So it's really bringing wireless Internet to the planet…and we're quite excited about it."

Intel says some notebook PCs equipped for WiMax will start to arrive in 2006…and the technology will compete with cable and DSL…

"Certainly. And it will add to it. In many places you can't get DSL or cable…as you go to more remote areas." Who will the providers be? "We expect much like with WiFi, that we'll see new carriers enter the marketplace. But most importantly, we expect to see most of the existing major carriers…the Sprints, Verizons, Deutsche Telecom, Korea Telecom…people across the globe to add to their service offerings with WiMax."

You'll be hearing lots more about WiMax…in the months to come. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
