LucasArts Uses The Force in Video Games

Techstination feature for Friday, October 1, 2004

When it comes to selling video games, it helps to have the force with you. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. (sound) The video game arm of George Lucas' business is out with Star Wars Battlefront. And it just so happens to coincide with the first time release on DVD of the original Star Wars trilogy. LucasArts' Jason Andersen…

"On that fourth disc of the DVD trilogy, along with the DVD there's going to be a demo, a playable demo of Star Wars Battlefront on that fourth disc. So fans who pick up the DVDs will be able to put that fourth disc in their Xbox, play a playable demo of the map of Endor, which is kind of a nice tie in between LucasFilm and LucasArts."

The company has been in the computer and video game business for 18 years. And Andersen says this latest game has something for fans of original movies…and the three prequels…which will wrap up next year…

"We're calling this pretty much the ultimate Star Wars experience. I mean we've got everything from all the movies, Episode I through Episode VI, there's even stuff from Episode III, the next movie that comes out in May 2005. We've got some content in there from Episode III, so that's exciting for us. But the basic game play, it's really that Star Wars sandbox that kids love. All the action figures, all the toys."

The company also continues to grow its subscription based online Star Wars Galaxies. The first expansion pack, Jump to Lightspeed, arrives this fall…with the empire conquering Japan as well. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
