A New Generation of Web TV

Techstination feature for Tuesday, October 5, 2004

Yet another generation of Web TV. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. It has been 8 years…since WebTV came along. The idea was to allow people to get on the Internet without the need for a computer…using the TV in the family room. A year after its introduction, the company was purchased by Microsoft and eventually re-named MSN TV. It has taken a while, but Microsoft is adding features that may make the concept appealing to more households. MSN TV 2…can connect to the Net through a traditional modem….or now…through a high speed cable or DSL connection. General Manager Sam Klepper…says the device is designed to be part of a home network…bringing digital music, photos and video stored on PCs…to the family room…

"Our target customer has PCs, has Internet access. So no longer do they have to be in their office, home office, to listen to the music that's on their PC or enjoy the photos or share the photos with others."

MSN TV 2 is being sold under the RCA brand name for about 200 dollars….including a wireless keyboard and mouse…but also requires a subscription fee of either 22 dollars a month for dial-up….or 10 dollars a month for customers who bring their own high speed Internet access. That makes it a pricier solution for sharing digital content around the home than devices being sold by Linksys, Gateway and others. They don't, however, have the same browsing and email capabilities. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
