Sony Prepares PlayStation Add-on

Techstination feature for Friday, February 12, 1999

When it comes to high tech toys, the top seller is still Sony's PlayStation. I'm Fred Fishkin with Bootcamp, a report on computers and technology. How popular is the PlayStation? It can now be found in 18 million, or one out of six homes in North America. Take domestic ticket sales for Titanic, Armageddon, Saving Private Ryan, There's Something About Mary and The Waterboy....put them all together....and you still wouldn't equal the amount spent on PlayStation software. And there are some new developments in the works. Kaz Hirai is Executive VP of Sony Computer Entertainment ...

"This year, we actually are going to be releasing what we call the PocketStation, which is a hand held device that attaches to the memory card slot of the PlayStation and you're actually able to download games onto the PocketStation and take it with you wherever you go. And this device was released in Japan late last month and we have high hopes for bringing the PocketStation to the U.S. as well."

In Japan, it's been selling for the equivalent of about 30 dollars. A killer price, but the trick is, it opens a whole new market for a new set of games. And they'll be multi-player...

"With the infrared capability, two PocketStations can communicate with each other so kids can actually play one on one."

Look for it later this year.
