PalmOne Updates the Treo

Techstination feature for Monday, October 25, 2004

PalmOne updates the Treo. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. It's called the Treo 650...and the latest smart phone from PalmOne has added features that should make it even more popular than previous versions of the smart phone. Senior product manager Michelle White....

It has a high resolution display, Bluetooth wireless technology embedded in it. We've done some great software work, enhancing our multimedia offerings as well as our email offerings. So we've taken our Treo 600 design and essentially evolved that and made it into an even better phone."

Both GSM and CDMA versions of the Treo 650 are on the way...making it available from a variety of carriers. The GSM version can use the higher speed Edge network for data. Among the other new features... a removable battery and flash memory to protect data from getting lost. Also improved...is the built in camera...

"The camera is a VGA camera. What we've done is improve the low light performance of the module. And essentially you can take a picture in low light settings like when you're out to dinner with your husband or wife. We use the camera in places where we don't carry a megapixel digital camera...and low light setting was really important to our customers. So we've improved that. It also captures not only still pictures, but video as well."

With other new cell phone cameras upping the resolution to one megapixel or more, the VGA limitation in the Treo 650 is a little disappointing. Pricing depends on carriers and service plans, but the smart phone is expected to sell for about 500 dollars. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
