Cell Phone Help With SAT Tests?

Techstination feature for Thursday, October 28, 2004

Can cell phones help teens with college admission tests? Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. Spending too much time on a cell phone…probably doesn't bode well for high school juniors or seniors getting ready to take the SATs and ACTs. Unless…they are using a new service from the Kaplan test preparation firm and Handmark…a company that sells software for PDAs and cell phones. Handmark VP Doug Edwards…

"What we've done is we've created a game like environment that allows people on a PDA or more than 90 models of mobile phones while they're standing in cue at the movie theatre or have a few minutes to kill, instead of just chatting up or SMSing their buddies on the phone, they can spend a few minutes take some practice test questions for their ACT, for their college admission, or we also have some great secrets in terms of things you need to know to prepare yourself for that test day."

There's a thirty dollar package for PDAs. Some cell phone carriers will begin selling the SAT prep service by the end of the year….for a few dollars a month. About how many airtime minutes the service will use up, Edwards says…

"You will use a little of your data minutes, your data time, when you download the questions. But it happens very quickly and it's not really going to have a big impact on your bill."

And maybe, just maybe….since it's on a cell phone…it's something kids will take a liking to. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
