Storing Your Digital Files Online

Techstination feature for Friday, October 29, 2004

Storing your digital files…online. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. Digital music, digital video, digital photos. They can take up gigabytes of storage on your PC…and transporting those files from one computer to another…or emailing them to someone else…can be next to impossible. Most email accounts limit the size of file attachments. A service called Streamload has a solution. CEO Steve Iverson…

"You can upload files to our service. We offer unlimited storage capacity. We only charge you or you use up your quota when you download or access those files. When the files are uploaded or stored, you can send them to anybody. They don't necessarily have to have a Streamload account to allow them access to those files."

The recipient does get prompted to create a Streamload account. A free version lets you store up to 1 gigabyte of files…and get 100 megabytes a month of free downloads. For ten dollars a month, storage is unlimited…and the subscription covers ten gigabytes of downloads a month. That's a lot of capacity. Who is using the service?

"We have a lot of MP3 enthusiasts and they want to provide access to their MP3 collection to themselves from home or work."

One big fear…is if you depend on storing important files on a service like this….what happens if they go out of business. Streamload has been around for more than four years. But its still a good idea to keep your own back-ups. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
