Techstination feature for Friday, November 5, 2004

AOL adds anti-virus. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. It's a service that the number one Internet service provider had been charging an extra 2.95 a month for. As the company rolls out what it calls AOL 9.0 Security Edition this month….the latest edition of its software…an anti-virus tool will be included at no extra cost. AOL's Andrew Weinstein…

"The entire focus of this new software is really on safety and security features for our members. The centerpiece of this software is going to be free premium anti-virus protection for all of our members using it. So we are becoming the first online service that provides comprehensive virus protection, that covers the entire computer, as part of our basic membership price."

McAfee VirusScan Online will be included for both dial up and broadband memberships. Even with all of the publicity that has surrounded computer viruses over the years, a study conducted by AOL and the National Cyber Security Alliance indicates many computers are still unprotected…

"63 percent of computer users had had a virus in the past and two thirds, a full two in three, did not have current anti-virus protection."

Microsoft's rival MSN Premium service also offers anti-virus protection. AOL is hoping the new features will help it retain subscribers….who have been leaving for less expensive or faster connections. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
