Video Game Makers Gear Up For Holidays

Techstination feature for Wednesday, November 10, 2004

Video game makers gear up for the holidays. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. The only new game machine arriving for the holidays this year….is the latest version of the Gameboy from Nintendo…the DS…which stands for dual screen. But with millions of Playstation2, Xbox and Game Cube consoles out there already….game makers are in the spotlight. Leading the way are Halo2 for the Xbox, Grand Theft Auto San Andreas for the PS2….and also for the Sony platform…Metal Gear Solid 3 from Konami….where product manager Jason Enos says….

"I think the reason this year is going to be so huge is Playstation2 as a platform certainly has the widest reach at the moment. All the consoles have been lower priced. If you haven't gotten on the boat yet to buy a console, here's like five more reasons why. The price is good for the console. There's already a humongous software library."

And sequels are what sell. The Metal Gear Solid franchise….created by Hideo Kojima….dates back to the mid-80s…

"His whole approach to making a video game borrows from a lot of his childhood experience. He was very interested in films and film making. He went to film school. He's brought a lot of those techniques that you would see in a typical Hollywood blockbuster action film, into video games."

All three of the top games…it should be noted are shooters….and carry mature ratings. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
