Sprint Gets Jump on New PDA Phones

Techstination feature for Friday, November 12, 2004

New Bluetooth PDA phones…from Sprint. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. They are the latest in the converged device category…the Treo650 from PalmOne and 6600 Pocket PC from Audiovox. Both are cell phones and PDAs with small keyboards…and include Bluetooth…for wireless connections to headsets and PCs. Sprint's business marketing director Kevin Packingham…says there will be camera and non-camera versions of both available as well. With a contract…both will sell for between 450 and 500 dollars. So when it comes to deciding which one to buy…

"It actually turns out that in most cases we find out that these are very different customers. The Pocket PC device tends to appeal to customers who have already adopted most of the Microsoft software for back office systems. The Treo, on the other hand, is much easier to set up from a desktop. It really turns up being an end user device. Anyone can grab the Treo and the advantages of the Treo are just automatically appealing."

Another advantage of the Treo 650….a cheaper unlimited data plan. Sprint says that's because the PocketPC's bigger screen, more powerful processor and far more built in memory…means its Web browsing experience is richer…as are its capabilities for downloading video and audio.
