Kodak Gains in Digital Cameras

Techstination feature for Tuesday, November 23, 2004

As film continues to fade, Kodak gains ground in the digital camera business. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. Kodak's digital sales last quarter shot up nearly forty percent….and the company is introducing new models it hopes will help it overtake leader Sony in U.S. digital cameras. Kodak's Mike McDougall says many consumers are looking to upgrade their first digital cameras….making new five megapixel models popular….

"One's the EasyShare DX7590 which is a 10X zoom camera to get really close to your subjects. The second is the EasyShare LS753 which is a tiny pocket camera. Great image quality but small enough to slip into a purse or bag when you go to a holiday party."

The DX7590 sells for about 450 dollars while the LS753 is about a hundred dollars less. The cameras include the ability to use Kodak's EasyShare Printer Docks….which the company hopes to sell to owners of other digital cameras as well…

"You press one button and it makes a print for you. We have announced a new standard called Image Link which companies such as Nikon, Olympus, Konika-Minolta and others will put a special connector on their cameras to allow their cameras to fit on our Printer Docks starting next year."

While the system works well, you do pay a little extra for the convenience. The cost per print using the Printer Dock is about 60 cents. Many stores today are making prints from digital camera memory cards for 29 cents or less. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
