For years, all in one remotes have been available that can control a variety of devices…TVs, DVD players and cable boxes. The latest generation, from Logitech's Harmony brand can do even more. The Harmony remotes can be updated and programmed from your PC. And the latest model is designed to work with Media Center computers as well. Logitech's Nathan Papadopoulos…

"We've launched a product called the Harmony 680, which is the first Harmony remote control that works with the Media PC right out of the box. And it also will connect to all of your home entertainment products."

Programming the remote is simple. Log onto the Harmony Web site….type in the model numbers of your components…from TVs to stereo receivers, DVDs and Tivos…and the proper codes are downloaded to your remote through a USB cable. From there, you can set up automated functions…

"What you do is just push those buttons and it will do everything that it needs to set up your system to get it to start working. So it will send the IR codes to turn the television to the right channel, set it to the right input, and turn your stereo to the right surround sound system that you have set up."

Prices range from a hundred fifty to two hundred dollars. Logitech faces competition in the high end universal remote business from Sony, RCA and Philips. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
