WiFi in a Piano?

Techstination feature for Friday, November 26, 2004

WiFi…in a piano? Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. Yamaha is introducing the first pianos….with built in wireless networking. What for? Marketing manager Dane Madsen…says it allows Yamaha's Disklavier system….to be controlled by handheld devices from anywhere in the house…

"We have a large, luxury tablet remote control with a built in WiFi card also and then the pocket remote control. More of a PDA sized remote control. Both of them are touch screens, but both of them are constantly communicating with the piano to say what song am I on? How far along in the song am I? Am I displaying lyrics? Am I showing you playlists. Both remote controls are constantly updated."

The newest Disklavier systems include hard drives to store digital instructions…that allow pianos to teach…or to accompany just about any music CD you may have…

"Disklavier is actually the modern day incarnation of what most people know as a player piano."

(sound)It's a marriage of technology…with the rich sound of a traditional piano. Prices can range from 30 thousand dollars and up. Yamaha also makes the technology available in some less expensive digital piano keyboards. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
