Online Pact Against Violence

Techstination feature for Monday, May 17, 1999

In the wake of Littleton, an online pledge against violence. I'm Fred Fishkin with Bootcamp, a report on computers and technology. A lot of parents are justifiably concerned about what their kids are doing online. What they are seeing, who they are chatting with. But don't think it's all bad. Since Littleton, many young people have spent a lot of time in chat rooms, talking it out. Now, America Online is reaching out to kids and their parents...with an online pledge....

"We're calling it The PACT, Parents and Children Together is the acronym and it's the PACT to stop violence on America Online and on aol.com on the web."

AOL VP Regina Lewis. There are online pledges for teens, younger children and their parents..

"In the kids' section it's things like, if I see or hear other kids talking about hurting people or doing things that could harm others, I will let an adult know as soon as I can."

The PACT tells kids violence is real and has permanent consequences. Parents can pledge to spend more time with thier children, talking to them, listening, getting involved with their schools. And if they have guns, to make sure they are out of reach. Tens of thousands have signed already, including many celebrities the kids will recognize. Again, you can find it on AOL with the key words The PACT. On the web, you can find it at aol.com.
