Better Wireless Networks

Better wireless networks. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. With multiple PCs in many households, many consumers are using wireless networks to share high speed Internet connections along with digital music, photos and other files. But the range of typical wireless networking equipment is limited by walls and floors…and may not reach where you need it to. There are some solutions on the market. Belkin is out with a Pre-N Wireless Router and network cards. Product manager Jonathan Bettino…

"we're able to transmit multiple data streams over a single channel. And the antenna design along with the chipset allows you to get greater coverage as well as greater speeds."

When the pre-N router and cards are used together….speeds are as much as 600 percent better than the standard 802.11G…while coverage is improved as much as 800 percent. Results aren't quite as dramatic when the 150 dollar router is used with standard B or G wireless cards. If you aren't looking to share video files within your home, a better 802.11B wireless router is being sold by a company called ParkerVision. VP John Stuckey…says instead of a maximum range of 300 feet…the SignalMax line can provide coverage of up to a mile…

"We believe that what's important is distance and coverage. And we have a new technology that allows us to do that in a way that no one else can."

Keep in mind that extending the range of your wireless network… makes security…using the built in safeguards… even more important. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
