Building Your Own Media Center

Building your own media center PC. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. It's not for everyone, but if you want to add Tivo-like capability to record live TV and share it around a home network…it isn't all that difficult. Frey Technologies is out with an updated version of SageTV. CEO Dan Kardatzke….

"We currently make available a Windows PC version at 79.95 and then the other requirement for that is a TV tuner card as well. And we start offering bundles at 150 that include the software and the tuner card and then we add remotes, USB versions and multiple tuner versions as well so you could record multiple channels at one time on your PC. And those go up to about 250 dollars."

And the SageTV system will work with some three or four year old PCs….as long as they run at 600 MHz or faster…and even notebooks. The price includes access to an integrated online program guide…something that costs extra with Tivo or ReplayTV devices. And with the hardware and software installed on one PC…the content can be available on other computers…or even your family room TV…

"We actually have a client application that you can install on other PCs across the network that gives you our SageTV interface on multiple PCs so that you're accessing the same guide information, you're streaming live TV. We can also extend that to extender devices.

The capabilities are even more advanced than the latest Media Center edition of Windows XP. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
