Will PCs be the heart of the digital home? Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. It was one of the big themes at this year's Consumer Electronics Show. What is the best kind of device for storing and sharing digital video, music and pictures. Intel, Microsoft and Hewlett Packard are among the companies that say personal computers are where the content belongs. But some think boxes like Tivo…which are more reliable and easier to use make more sense. Are PCs too complex? Intel CEO Craig Barrett says…
"Well the people who make those arguments are probably all over the age of 45. You can't find a teenager who would tell you the PC is probably too complex or has too much processing power or it's not a useful device. Clearly the challenge for the industry is the same challenge the consumer electronics industry has had over the years… make the user interface simpler."
Microsoft's Media Center Edition of Windows XP is a step in the right direction…but there is plenty of competition. Still, Barrett says…
"Well we're really pushing not so much to have the PC be the focal point, but to be one of the important devices in the digital home." Intel plans to introduce dual core processors by the end of this year…that will computers more capable of handling multiple tasks around the home at the same time…
"It's really the technique which will continue Moore's law. This concept of doubling computing power every eighteen months or so."
