Cell Phone Data at Broadband Speed

Techstination feature for Wednesday, January 19, 2005

Cell phone data…at broadband speed. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. Verizon Wireless, which has been selling high speed access cards for notebook computers that use the company's EVDO network, is about to introduce cell phones that can do it too. So what can you do with a faster data connection on a cell phone? Verizon Wireless CEO Denny Strigl…

"What you can see from Verizon Wireless in the way of 3G services is video, video clips, 3D games, access through our partners, such as VH1, MTV and others like Fox and many other partnerships that we've struck here for our services. But I think that this will have a great application for consumers across the United States." What are your sales projections for it for this year? "Well I'm not going to give specific sales projections. Let me just say that we know from what we have seen, particularly in Asia, that this will be very big in the United States and big for Verizon Wireless." The services will be 15 dollars a month. What will the handsets cost? "Well the handsets can range anywhere from about a hundred fifty dollars to three hundred fifty dollars."

There will be three EVDO phones available starting in February…from LG, Samsung and Audiovox…all flip phone styles. Verizon expects to be selling more by the end of the year. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
