Audible Gets Assist...From Apple

Techstination feature for Thursday, February 3, 2005

Another company gets an assist from Apple's iPod. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. The popularity of Apple's digital music players…has created lots of opportunities for companies making all kinds of add-ons…from cases to speakers and car adaptors. And Apple has also given an assist to Audible…a company that has been making digital audio versions of books and other content available…years before the iPod came along. But with the capability to play Audible content being built into every iPod….CEO Donald Katz says…

"Well you know we grew, even without digital audio players being on the market, other than the ones we created, we over the course of these years had 26 quarters of double digit quarter over quarter revenue growth. So we continuously grew very, very quickly in terms of both revenue and customers. But it's only really now that people are starting to buy MP3 players, iPods, all of the other different kinds of audio devices that play Audible in large numbers. And still it's just the beginnings of household penetration."

Among Audible's new partnerships, is one with a company called Orb, that will let subscribers access content stored on their PCs, from any Web browser…including those on cell phones…

"You can be in Asia, basically, and get back to your network and stream, in our case, audio to your cell phone."
