Video Game Makers Await PSP

Techstination feature for Thursday, February 10, 2005

Video game makers await Sony's PSP. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. Sony's PSP or PlayStation Portable is set to go on sale in the United States on March 24th. The 249 dollar price makes it more expensive than either the PlayStation2 or the Xbox full-sized consoles. But the PSP package will include headphones a Memory Stick and a copy of the Spider-Man 2 movie on a UMD disc, designed for the PSP. Sony says it will have a million of the handheld game machines available in the U.S….hoping to topple Nintendo from its perch as the leading maker of handhelds. And there will be more than two dozen games available at launch. At Electronic Arts, game producer Matt Tomporowski says the goal is…

"We're aiming for six. So we have NFS Underground Rivals, we have Tiger Woods, we have MVP Baseball, we have NBA Street, we have FIFA Soccer and we have NFL Street."

EA and other game makers…Activision, Konami, Take Two Interactive…have high hopes for the PSP platform…

"The expectation is there's a new wave of gaming coming. And the PSP is a lot more than just a video game device. The fact is, we expect that people will own this device and we'd like to be there offering the games that they'll play."

Built in WiFi for head to head gaming is another feature. Sony has delayed the launch of the PSP in Europe…so that it will have more available to meet the U.S. demand. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
