Iomega & the Digital Home

Iomega and the digital home. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. Not too many years ago, Iomega had a big lead over rivals in the portable computer storage business with its Zip drives. But CD and now DVD burners have provided cheaper alternatives….and Zip drives have been fading away. Iomega's CEO Werner Heid still sees opportunities, however, for the company to play a key role in the digital home…

"There are really three major tasks where I think we can play a big role. One is helping and aggregating the information. Aggregation means centralizing the information at one central storage place. Second layer is really the area of protection. Making sure that the information, the pictures you shot, the videos you bought, the videos you produced yourself, are protected." It sounds like you may be getting into an area beyond simple storage….might you get into a media server kind of business? "I think we will get into an area called intelligent storage."

Iomega has introduced a partnership for a technology it calls Folder Share that will allow buyers of its drives to access stored data via the Internet….

"You can actually go anywhere in the world and access this information. And so that's one of the first areas where we are rolling out part of our home digital strategy."
