A Pocket Sized 7 Megapixel Camera

Techstination feature for Monday, February 21, 2005

A pocket sized seven megapixel camera. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. Casio has helped to make pocket sized digital cameras popular with its Exilim line. Among the new models just announced…is the EX Z750. Director of product development Scott Nelson…

"What we did is take the Exilim Zoom sized cameras, the Z series, and we've put in a 7.2 megapixel sensor. We have a 2 and a half inch screen, optical viewfinder, we also added aperture priority mode, shutter priority mode, full manual mode so it has all the manual settings you want in your camera. And we've taken the movie mode and we've now brought it up to MPEG4, VGA, 640 by 480, 30 frames a second limited only by available memory, which a 1 gig card will give you 40 minutes of near DVD quality movies."

Falling prices for memory cards means a 7 megapixel camera….and shooting video on the cards…are a lot more practical than they would have been a year ago. The Z750 will arrive on store shelves next month for under 450 dollars. Casio is also building software into the camera offering a variety of new special effects. That includes a feature called continuous zooming…

"In one shot, we take two pictures. One is a 7 megapixel image of the whole scene and then the second is a 2 megapixel image of the point of focus."

The unique features have helped Casio boost sales in the face of tough competition from rivals that include…Kodak, Sony, Canon, Olympus and Fuji. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
