HomePlug AV on the Way

A wired network that you don't have to wire. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. Powerline networking has been around for several years….allowing you link computers together and share an Internet connection by using your existing electrical wiring. But the equipment has typically been more expensive and slower than installing a wireless network. What may make the technology more popular however….are new faster standards that will arrive this year….and some new applications. At Intellon Corporation, a leading maker of powerline communications equipment, senior VP Andreas Melder says one of the new standards is called HomePlug AV…

"As the home migrates to content distribution, people are more interested now in distributing video and audio and things which require a high degree of latency control. And you need a stable backbone within the home to do that. Wireless has its place. Wireless is great for mobile applications."

Melder says HomePlug AV delivers much faster and more stable connections than the best wireless networks. And eventually, the networking equipment will be built in…and connect when you simply plug them into an electrical outlet…

"Flat panel TVs, DVD players, set top boxes, PVRs… all of those products are candidates for networking using HomePlug connectivity."

Melder says consumers will start to see products using HomePlug AV arrive by early next year. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
