Digital Camcorders for Kids

Techstination feature for Thursday, March 3, 2005

Digital camcorders…for kids. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. Digital Blue…a company that specialized in high tech toys that utilize the power of personal computers….is introducing two new camcorders for children. One, with a built in SD memory card slot and a button on the side…straps onto bicycle or skateboarding helmets so kids can shoot video on the move. It will come with software for editing, adding animation and music. The Digital Helmet Camera will arrive this spring. Out even sooner….is the American Idol Digital Camcorder. Digital Blue CEO Tim Hall…

"It's a complete camcorder that records video to your computer. It comes with a microphone and software so you can make your own music videos. We're really excited to partner with the people at American Idol because we know we've found a way to bring all the excitement of the show to somebody's living room."

With the included software, kids can create videos with the American Idol logo and audience applause. One downside is…untethered from a PC…the camera only has enough memory to record four minutes of video…and there is no memory card slot to expand that. But…

"It comes with built in music. I've just opened the software and there's all of these different elements that you can integrate. You can take shots straight from the show."

And the release is timed to the arrival of the new American Idol season. The camcorder package sells for under a hundred dollars. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
