Improving sound, without a room full of speakers. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. It has a sleek, low profile but the sound it reproduces…is big. A company called Soundmatters is out with a box it calls the MAINstageCV. VP Lee Adams…

"CV stands for Clear Voice. Now what the MAINstage is, is a very small set top box. Something that you could put on a television, under a television…that's about the size of a clock radio, a large clock radio, and it is a combination virtual surround sound system and a product that allows you to understand dialogue from television or lyrics form songs much more clearly than you might be able to do from a traditional television loudspeaker."

A button on the remote allows you to boost those vocal frequencies to make for easier listening for those who are hearing impaired…and those who aren't. The MAINstageCV is an alternative to the theatre in a box speaker systems that have become popular….

"This is a great alternative to that. It's quite simple. The amplifier, all the speakers…even a mini little sub-woofer and the surround processor are all built into a little bitty box and you can fill your room with quite excellent sound."

The price…about three hundred dollars. Soundmatters was founded by Godehard Guenther, a rocket scientist who was NASA's project manager for SkyLab. He also headed Braun Audio in Germany. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
